It was the first university that I got started with.

When I was a child, Harvard was the representation of universities. Everybody knew Harvard, which made it the seemingly best school in the world. That's all my memory about Harvard. We regarded people who got accepted in Harvard as elites.

It is the first university that I give up.

As I grew, Harvard came closer because I knew more of it yet was farther away as well because I knew my ability couldn't reach that level.

Some people suggested that we could have a try, cramming for it. But, it was not about how much endeavor you made to be one of Harvard. It was about how addicted of you to it.

Cultural match is also important. When I arrived at Harvard theatre hall, It was nothing special compared to other classic buildings among old universities. But when I was waiting at the front door, hoping to get in, I glanced the inside structure of that hall. Dim but solemn, like the formal Middle Ages church. As I walked in, a distinct and dignified air filled in to my body and everyone's. The most majestic campus is here. Likewise, AO was also a very dignified person, stating Harvard's basic info with 2 students through who we could get general student's opinion about Harvard campus life and study experience.

Oscar点评:这篇文章体现出来的对于学校和个人兴趣以及能力的匹配是留学选校中间超级重要的一个原则,美国大学择校到底不同于国内,有很多选择余地,选择自己喜欢的,才是顶顶要紧。

A cold welcome

We were received coldly at Harvard. The receptionist was unfriendly and she was surprised at our visit! But it was heartwarming that Harvard eventually let us in though they did not allow groups in. Scintillating light sparks dimmed and then an admission officer walked out with two Harvard's students to the stage of Harvard's splendid hall. Unprecedentedly, they sat down at once, which appalled us audiences. Patronizing? They did not even care a little bit!

The one-hour information session was separated into two sections, campus information and admission. The officer seldom spoke and simply asked the students to answer audiences' questions, yet she did patiently listen to audiences. I nervously waited for an opportunity to ask a question. However, they seemed unwittingly ignored me several times; I finally communicated with the officer right after the session. Since her attitude was slightly condescending, I waived the idea of getting her email address for further contacts and overlaps.

Harvard's campus tour guide was super nice and she was really amazing. She precisely described the three lies about the controversial statue placed on the lawn, explained the building history and sake of the huge library's construction. The story behind was rather touching and appealed to our emotions. Gazing at the grand library, we met the common but stirring reminisce for a mournful mother's dead son. Anyway, legend of Titanic had not only Jack and Rose's grieving romance, but also maternal sorrow which tugged listeners' depth of empathy. I asked Grace, the tour guide how many hours she slept per night, and she unwrapped most of misconceptions and misgivings about Harvard students' harmful shortage of sleep. She sincerely told me that Harvard students might sleep sound and well if they could properly balance hard-working and rest. MIT's passionate tour guide Nina gave the same answer. Some people slept 2 hours, some 8.

Nina was an enthusiastic extrovert. She gestured and jumped in order to make facile understanding. In the end, she humorously joked that we "survived" the visit. Moreover, MIT's critiques about Harvard were pretty intriguing. They just held friendly emulations. I regretted to report that I failed to recount MIT's specific infos because I was terribly fatigued and could logically remember nothing. These two ivory towers were exceedingly towering in our wildest dreams. So did their applications and essays. Painstakingly happy, overwhelmingly strong, and persistently unreasonable.

On the first day in Boston, we are to visit two famous institutions: Harvard and MIT, both of them sitting on the banks of Charles River.

Harvard’s info session was held in the sublime memorial hall. The presenting way was much more innovative, with the AO occasionally interviewing the student representatives or asking them to cover the details and personal feelings.

When listening to the info session, I suddenly grew confident, realizing that my future is just in my hands, and all need to do is to grab the opportunities. These feelings came occasionally when things are going pretty smoothly recently, and greatly motivates you to try and challenge your limits. Why not ask a question about the Financial Aid policies? Although you are not considering Harvard currently, you should just find a chance to get yourself prepared for communicating in English.

The thought threw me a chill. What’s wrong, dude? Why so agitated?

After a deep breath, I raised my hand. This is it.

“Does the application for financial aid, uh, affect the admission of international students?”

So neat. My voice was clear, natural, nearly without accent. I’m getting narcissistic. The whole world is mine. I can do anything if I want. Maybe I should ask my senior 1 English teacher about helping in a related program to guarantee an impressive recommendation letter. Oh god damn it life is so good.

I know I seem very fanatical and hilarious, but that’s truly some sort of precious experience for a foreigner.

Why finding confidence in Harvard? That’s a great question. Maybe I’m ignited by the school’s spirit? I do not know for sure.

We have MIT to visit this afternoon. MIT was considered, literally, as a traditional scientific and technological institution, but the AO claimed that they also have a variety of majors including humanities and social science. Students are required to take classes in these fields, and the requirements, known as GIR, are aimed to provide a well-rounded education for students.

We get to go into a dorm room on the campus tour. The room has two students living in, not big but cozy, kind of have views from a room on ship. The tour guide is quite enthusiastic too, kept talking about “hacks” and interesting things that happened on campus. There’s even an annual event for “nerds to watch pumpkins destroyed”. Maybe MIT students are surely a bunch of nerds, a bunch of innovative nerds who can make every day a party.

I have to say Boston has decent summers, cool and so comfortable when winds run through besides the Charles River. The sky is really pure blue, with beautiful clouds that seems inches above the ground when lying on the lawn in front of the dome hall. Fragrant, the grass was so soft that I can’t help rolling on it. That must be one of the best memories I had during this 9-day trip.

When sun casts its light from the west, gilding the waves, we left the campus of MIT, heading for a Chinese restaurant. We sat right opposite to the door, half story below the street, breeze going straight in. That was a great memory too, best thing ever. We enjoyed delicious food, joking and sharing funny experiences with each other, and shared interesting photos, just like a reunion in China.

It’s near the end. We’re going back to China tomorrow (it’s 1 o’clock July 20th currently), leaving a whole bunch of memories in USA behind, but I still remember the very first meal I had in America. Time just flies.

I guess I’ll never forget this trip. I was so exhausted, sleeping only 5-6 hours a day, but learned a lot. I’m looking forward to TODAY’s journal now, the last one on this land.

Argh, hungry. I shall grab some snacks and sleep.

Oscar评点:对于一个能从写作中收获乐趣的人来说,写作本身就是一种奖励,正如在哈佛info session,王苏那么自然而又刻意的问出了那个问题。有时候,just doing things is the rewarding.

Day 6 Harvard & MIT

Harvard, in everyone's mind, is such a dream (no need for adding school here). Unlike Yale, Harvard's architecture style is monotonous: buildings are covered by RED, but it is such that gives people a sense of splendor, in China for red wall means royal palace, in which the Emperor lived, like the Forbidden City. As for the info session of Harvard, the AO used many ''est'' to describe Harvard: ''we are the oldest school of US'', ''we have the biggest library system of the world''. She sits on the stage and speaks predominantly. All of these provide the evidence that Harvard is a high-key school, and even the tour guide introduces her school with a profoundly proud tone.

However, seemingly a school with rigorous and high level concentration of its ''appearance'', John Harvard`s statue is a totally ''counter-example''. As no one knew exactly what Harvard looked like, The founder just sought someone in the campus who looks like HARVARD in person! HaHa.

Though just across one street to Harvard, MIT has many different features. If we say Harvarders are extraordinary normal persons, then MITers should be extraordinary “abnormal” person; if we say Harvard is a historical school with the venerable, then MIT should be the one where people have extremely passions; if we say Harvard contributes to foster leaders, then MIT devotes its all resources to fund amdneutrue students' ideas and to solve their problems. The tour guide of MIT seems really ebullient, but in my eyes, she's not exciting for the job, but for herself --- studying and living in such lovely place is a considerable happy thing.

During those info sessions in such two schools, I realize that the insights towards the university are apparently different between Chinese and Americans. Chinese parents only focus on the rank, as it is famous or not, which seems we only regards some superficial things important (Ironic!). However, in US, whether parents or AOs have a deep understand of how universities choose their students, the fact that the student himself or herself fit or not is more important. The whole process is more like the students and schools both choose each other, and school may reject the student if the AOs think the student does not BELONG here. University, here in US, is Family, where you can rely on whenever and wherever. Therefore, just be yourself, if you do not belong here, what left you in the follow year will only be painful.

Night, we talk about essay. The key word of two essays is about PASSION. Whatever you do, show your passions and who you are. American schools are really about interest, if they think you are one member of the family, you will be admitted then. So, many students would talk about just being what they want to see. WRONG. There's never only one type of people the top universities seeking for; instead, they actually want nobody same.

Thinking about where my passion lies, my eyes close tightly... Fall asleep.

Oscar点评:同样听讲座,收获大不同。大家看看天琦文中内容就知道她一直在听,认真的听。

Renowned as the Harvard College is, it does have intriguing details that students on campus can be thrilled about. The housing day is one of those that reveal this college as approachable.

Surveyed about personal habits and stuff, the freshmen will each choose seven others to be the ones living with them, awaiting their upperclassmen who can not wait to propaganda their houses’ tradition to them and declare their houses. That being said, houses are not only regarded as students’ identity, but a cornerstone as well. It is precisely through mixing students up scientifically that Harvard College offer the students the chance to learn from each other, exchanging idea with value to each other. Thus, the housing plays an instrumental role in students’ living and studying here, which is quite a novel fact to know about Harvard college.

Moving on, the tour guide in MIT exhibited what kind of people MIT students typically are, as in revealing us their M.O.. Immersed in her own approach of speaking up to the crowd, she acted kind of ‘nerdy’ yet perfectly illustrating how one should be confident in himself or her self as well as how one is concentrated on matters. Passionate as she was, she did show the crowd that it is exactly through being ‘geek’ at times on what people are passionate about that they qualify themselves that they get to dive further in the fields in MIT.

Perhaps one of the most pivotal questions posted up to now on our journey is the one required this evening: what is the purpose of college education. College education is about seeking for one’s true passion and pursuing it. But apart from that, it is also concerned with developing one into a well grounded person, whereby he or she could thus contribute to not only the campus but the whole society as well. In terms of me myself, I have started an English Speaking Club, meaning I am interested in aiding people to overcome their hurdles in delivering speeches and make public speaking more approachable. So maybe I could learn more about how or stuff like that in an attempt to contribute to the society. It was not until I was posted this inquiry that I realized what I have come to perceive and, more importantly,  understand and put into my own utilization  these days through all the info sessions and campus tours, which are infiltrated with personal perspectives on college life and my own elaborative thoughts on them.

Oscar点评:真是很喜欢每个孩子在听Info session时候自己捕捉的对他或者有用的信息。

Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology maybe are two of the most famous universities in China ,which invariably represent the highest quality of education. So when I was walking around this two campuses, I concentrated myself on finding the difference between these two schools and the others.

The info session of Harvard, however, didn’t leave me a good impression. Unlike other schools whose admission officer stood off the stage while giving the whole speech, Harvard seems to tell the entire student that it is your honor to study in my campus so I do not have to care about your feeling during the info session. As a result of holding this kind of attitude, the admission officer and the two students sit on the stage, and crossed their legs as if they were on a national news conference. The following campus tour is pretty good. Something I found interesting is our tour guide who does not major in the field of science, but in art. This is totally different from our common point of view that we ought to study in the major that help to increase competiveness. We asked the girl about it, and the girl answered that Harvard could offer what she needs as a university. How willful and how excellent she is, we thought.

The visit to MIT changed my former view of this school. As was the admission officer has pointed out in the info session, MIT do not only offer the major in science, but also in social science and art. The passionate tour guide of our campus tour showed us the variety that an ivy school can be. The modern buildings in MIT campus make the university unique from others. We also had a look at a sample dorm room. In the group activity this evening, I deeply felt that the score of standardized tests is not the only necessity to get the offer of MIT; you have to have some special skills or long-lasting hobbies.

The Vietnam Ho Fan Noodles in Harvard dining hall and the Chinese food in Beijing Cafe is very delicious.

Today is sunny with marshmallow-like clouds. So the photos I took are really fascinating, especially when backgrounding the characteristic building in the campus.

Oscar点评:景楠,对于自己观察到的现象,能有理性的对比,判断和分析,这是非常好的品质,也是非常大的进步。

Harvard, my beauty.

I only saw you in my sweet daydreams, and I could tell you that every time I felt your glamour, your enchantment, I couldn’t help falling in love with your luxuriant trees, your endearing greenbelt, and your architectures again and again.

But when I finally set foot on the grassland, and listened to the officer in the hall, I sensed something different. You were saying hello and have a good day with a treacly smile in your melodious voice, but I did not see any happiness in the smile and voice.  I am afraid I am wearing away your welcome.

Why? Where was that pleasure I used to feel at the mere thought of Harvard, even in dreams?

When I was only a child, I would say that I would try my best to work hard so that I could get closer to Harvard, but now I realized, some dreams are to be achieved while some are to be dreamt. Harvard ceases to matter but my dreams weigh as much.

It's time to act.

Only kids would keep saying they are going to change but do nothing. As the dream became clearer, I found the world turned to be lovelier.

Every day I wake up, the sky becomes bluer, the heart becomes brighter, the brain becomes smarter. Only because I have got my goal. Dreams are something really can effect people, when you feel you are working on it, you would be powerful and willing too. Every step you took, every work you did, every chance you caught, all of them would made you realize that you are only and happily working hard for yourself, for the life you wanted to lead in.

I know exactly the application would be difficult. The procession always hard to move on. But I have talked to myself about the whole picture for many times. I know what I really want, and fortunately I know how I get it started with some people nice and kind and always ready to help.

So I decided, when I return to Beijing, I will keep pushing me like this. I will try to write a passage every day and find many people to hear their opinions about my essays. Oscar was right: I was lucky.

Good night, Harvard. Hope I could see you in my dreams.
